PATHS AND FLAVOURS OF THE EMPEROR - THE ROUTE OF FREDERICK II
This itinerary, developed around the famous castle of Frederick II, revolves around many local features connected with the "Murgia" countryside and its rural productions and traditions. The area is that of the towns of Andria and Corato (about 45 km from the capital of the region, Bari) where the excellent food and wine, wheat fields and olive groves around Castel del Monte ("centre of gravity" of this route), represent a strong identity element for tourism and the driving force of local development.
Among the strengths in the food and wine sector, wine productions stand out for their quality, recognized with DOC marks. And we cannot fail to mention the extra virgin olive oil. Andria and Corato are the cradle of the excellent "Coratina olive variety", which produces an intensely flavoured, fragrant, gold green oil.
Next to the wine and oil, we must not forget the dairy products: the famous Andria burrata, the mozzarellas and the canestrato cheese have made Andria and Corato cheeses renowned for their flavour and organoleptic properties. All these products are the basic ingredients of the cuisine that can be enjoyed in restaurants and hotels along the route: from the slopes of Castel del Monte to the rural paths of the National Park of Alta Murgia.
The tourist arriving for the first time in this corner of Puglia, is captured by fascinating landscapes to explore on foot, by bike or on horseback, which still retain precious signs of centuries-old traditions passed down by the people who inhabited in the past: a combination of authenticity, history, culture and nature of unparalleled beauty that expresses the values typical of the Murgia region in Puglia. The route revolves around Castel del Monte, part of the ancient villages of Andria and Corato and walks "refreshed" by the flavours of the typical regional cuisine.
A “path” of Puglia to discover.
