RIGHT ROMEA NONANTOLANA ROUTE

This route runs from Nonantola to Fanano in 4 stages, along the road used in medieval times by merchants and pilgrims.

The route, about 93 km long, runs mainly along the right bank of the Panaro river, crossing the Sassi di Roccamalatina Regional Park, characterized by its unique and imposing sandstone pinnacles and by a well-preserved rural landscape.

Travelling time on foot:
25 Hours

STAGE 1 - Spilamberto

The first stage reaches Spilamberto, seat of the Consortium of the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, on rural paths, roads and, as it approaches the town, cycle paths.

STAGE 2 - SASSI DI ROCCAMALATINA PARK

The second stage, ending at Sassi di Roccamalatina Park, follows mainly the nature path running along the Panaro river to Casona. After crossing the river, the route climbs along narrow paths to the Pieve di Trebbio, in the heart of the regional park.

STAGE 3 - Montese

The third stage crosses the regional park, touches main geographical features in it such as the sandstone pinnacles and the Riva mountains and, after a long stretch of paths marked by the CAI signs 400, 434 and 440, it reaches Montese.

STAGE 4 - Fanano

From Montese, the long and challenging fourth stage leads to Fanano, going through Maserno, Castelluccio, Rocca Corneta and Trignano.
The view from Monte della Croce, a short way from Castelluccio, is incredibly vast and the stretch from Rocca Corneta to Trignano is extremely fascinating.
